One of the standards that we follow is the Israeli fumehoods SII 1839 Test and Certification, which is issued by the Standards Institution of Israel (SII). This standard is based on the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2243.8 – 2006 Safety in Laboratories – Fume Cupboards, which details the requirements for an adequate face velocity for the containment of fumes.

The SII 1839 Test and Certification consists of several procedures, including:
• Visual inspection of the fumehood’s structure, materials, dimensions, and components.
• Measurement of the face velocity of the fumehood at different sash positions and airflow settings.
• Tracer gas test to determine the fumehood’s containment performance and leakage rate.
• Smoke visualization test to observe the airflow patterns and turbulence inside and outside the fume hood.

The test results are compared with the acceptance criteria specified by the SII 1839 standard:
• Face velocity should be between 0.4 and 0.6 m/s.
• Tracer gas leakage rate should not exceed 0.1 ppm.
• The light level inside the fumehood should be at least 500 lux.
• The sound level inside the fumehood should not exceed 65 dB.
• The fumehood should be located at least 1.2 m away from doors, windows, or other sources of air disturbance.
• The fumehood should be located at least 0.6 m away from other fumehoods or walls.
